“Pronto chi parla?” The Evolution of Italian Public Telephony

“Pronto chi parla?” The Evolution of Italian Public Telephony

Curated by the Museo della Telefonia Pubblica.

There was a time when communication meant leaving the house, finding an available telephone booth, and patiently waiting your turn. A time when these booths were landmarks in city squares, train stations, along highways, and in small villages, becoming an integral part of the daily lives of millions of Italians. The Museum of Public Telephony invites you to rediscover this fascinating narrative through an exhibition charting the evolution of Italian public telecommunications. The display features the iconic phone booths alongside the devices that accompanied entire generations, complemented by historical accessories, archival documents, service vehicles, and the tools employed by the technicians who daily maintained one of the country’s most vast and capillary networks.

Behind every public telephone lay a complex organization driven by constant maintenance, technological innovation, and thousands of men and women who helped ensure an essential service that could reach even the most remote locations.

Today, in the era of smartphones and instantaneous connectivity, these objects tell a story of ingenuity, social customs, and progress. The exhibition brings together some of the most iconic and representative pieces of public telephony, organized by era and typology, offering visitors a journey through memory and the history of Italian telecommunications.

It is an opportunity to rediscover not only the evolution of technology, but also the memories, emotions, and daily rituals that shaped entire generations.
